Space VLBI at Low Frequencies
نویسنده
چکیده
At sufficiently low frequencies, no ground-based radio array will be able to produce high resolution images while looking through the ionosphere. A space-based array will be needed to explore the objects and processes which dominate the sky at the lowest radio frequencies. An imaging radio interferometer based on a large number of small, inexpensive satellites would be able to track solar radio bursts associated with coronal mass ejections out to the distance of Earth, determine the frequency and duration of early epochs of nonthermal activity in galaxies, and provide unique information about the interstellar medium. This would be a “spacespace” VLBI mission, as only baselines between satellites would be used. Angular resolution would be limited only by interstellar and interplanetary scattering.

A GPS-based method to model the plasma effects in VLBI observations
Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites broadcast at frequencies of 1,575.42 MHz (L1) and of 1,227.60 MHz (L2). The dispersive property of the ionosphere can be used to combine independent measurements at the two frequencies to estimate the total electron content (TEC) between a GPS receiver site and a broadcasting satellite. Such measurements, made at sites near to Very Long Baseline Interf...

The quasar 3C 345 is one of the best examples of extra-galactic jet with superluminal components moving on helical paths. To get better constraints on the jet physics, we have imaged the source at the highest possible resolution, using mm-VLBI and space-VLBI observations. We observed 3C 345 at 5 different epochs so far (1 epoch with 3-mm ground VLBI, and 4 epochs with space VLBI at 6 cm and 18 ...
متن کاملSpace - VLBI observations of OH maser OH 34 . 26 + 0 . 15 : low interstellar scattering
We report on the first space-VLBI observations of the OH34.26+0.15 maser in two main line OH transitions at 1665 and 1667 MHz. The observations involved the space radiotelescope on board the Japanese satellite HALCA and an array of ground radio telescopes. The map of the maser region and images of individual maser spots were produced with an angular resolution of 1 milliarcsec which is several ...
متن کاملNUclei of GAlaxies
We present high angular resolution radio snap-shot observations of seven nearby low-luminosity active galaxies (LLAGN) from the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) survey. The observations were conducted with MERLIN and EVN/VLBI at 18 cm and 6 cm. At all observed angular resolutions and frequencies, we find indications for extended emission in about ∼ 40% of the sources, consistent with the decrease of f...

Studying transient phenomena with the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) technique faces severe difficulties because the turnaround time of the experiments from the observations to the scientific result is rather long. The e-VLBI technique has made it possible to transfer the data from a number of European VLBI Network (EVN) telescopes to the central data processor at JIVE through optical...
